What is ECT?

ECT means electoconvulsive therapy, an electrical current passed through a person, used within hospitals for the treatment of severe depressive illness, catatonia or prolonged or severe manic episode, when other forms of treatment have not worked.

It is however not commonly used. In Scotland approximately 1,000 people a year are given ECT treatment.
