TWO Support in Mind Scotland projects in Dumfries are now enjoying a new lease of life after making the move from their previous premises in Gordon Street to an impressive centrally-located base at 28 Munches Street.

The Life Skills Project and CU Thru Dumfries have settled well into the bright and spacious three-level building and staff and service users were beaming with pride when they welcomed more than 150 guests to an official opening night on Monday (12 June).

Among the guests were the newly-elected leaders of Dumfries and Galloway Council - Councillor Elaine Murray is the Council Leader with Councillor Rob Davidson as Depute Leader and Civic Head.

In the week prior to the grand opening, the new building had a visit from a four-piece string quartet, who are part of the Scottish Ensemble. Together with a small but select group of the Life Skills group’s artists they created some beautiful music, and some fantastic art.

Transforming the building at Munches Street has been no mean feat and staff, service users and volunteers all worked tremendously hard to get it ready. They were also grateful to volunteers from Lloyds Banking Group – our charity partners through Mental Health UK - who came along and mucked in. The building is an of teamwork at its best.

Two service users in particular, James Harper and Derek Walker, played a key part in getting the building ready, and they were chosen to perform ribbon-cutting duties to officially open the project entrance door and shop.

Project manager John Scott paid tribute to the pair: “They have painted, laid carpets, hung blinds, repaired ceiling tiles, fixed numerous little annoying things, painted the staircase, laid out the shop, and much much more. We would be nowhere near ready to open were it not for the two of them.”
