RISING track star Maria Lyle, a European champion and Commonwealth Games silver medallist, has given her backing to Support in Mind Scotland's 100 Streets Challenge.

Inspirational Maria from Dunbar in East Lothian only turned 19 last month, but already has a string of medals and records to her name, and can look forward to a bright future in world athletics.

She is also fiercely passionate about mental health, and is keen to raise awareness of the issues people face by working alongside Support in Mind Scotland.

Sprinter Maria, who has cerebral palsy, has become a stand-out performer in the T35 class, and received widespread praise when she spoke bravely about our her own mental health struggles last August after successfully defending her 100 metres title at the World-Para European Championships.

At the time, Maria said: "I have had a tough year and struggled with my mental health. I have had a few difficult years and when you don’t perform it can eat you up as a person when you expect so much.”

Now Maria, a civil servant with the Scottish Government, has kindly volunteered her time to raise mental health awareness by promoting Support in Mind Scotland's work.

She is the ideal candidate to help promote our free 100 Streets Challenge, which calls on people to walk, run or cycle 100 streets in their community to encourage physical activity and improve mental well-being.

Maria, who is in Dubai competing in the World Para Athletics Grand Prix this month, said: "Mental health is a cause close to my heart and I am delighted to be help Support in Mind Scotland with this great initiative.

"I know from my own experience that mental ill health affects many of us, but it is reassuring that there are charities like Support in Mind Scotland around to offer help and support to people when they need it."
