More than 200 people turned out at Pitreavie Sport and Soccer Centre on Saturday (August 18) to celebrate the life of young Dunfermline man Calum Reid with a memorial football match in aid of Support in Mind Scotland.

Since Calum passed away in August 2017 after a struggle with mental health issues, his family and friends have raised more than £7,000 for SiMS, which provides services to people affected by mental illness in Fife and across Scotland.

A select team made up of Calum’s friends took on his former club Elgin Star for the Calum Reid Memorial Shield on Saturday, and following a minute’s applause, the Calum Reid XI won a keenly-contested match 2-0.

Many local businesses generously supported the event by donating raffle prizes, while Scotland rugby star Murray McCallum – a school friend of Calum’s – attended the game and kindly donated a signed Edinburgh shirt.

Calum’s mother Laura said: “What happened with Calum left us totally devastated, but we have tried to stay positive. If our fundraising and efforts to raise mental health awareness can help one person then it has all been worthwhile. I have been blown away by everyone’s support, it has overwhelmed me completely.

“The last year has been the most difficult of my life, but thanks to the fantastic support of friends, family and Calum’s group of amazing friends, we have been able to raise some more money for what is a subject very close to all our hearts. We intend to keep the fundraising going with various events throughout the year.”

Calum’s friend Conor Gray, who helped organise the match, said: “We want to encourage people to talk before it’s too late. We want to help people realise that they are not alone and there is nothing that cannot be overcome, whether it be financial issues, addictions or just a lack in self-confidence. Our way of helping is to do as much as we can for our chosen charity Support in Mind Scotland.”

Colin Leslie, Fundraising Manager for Support in Mind Scotland, said: “The football match was just the latest in a series of remarkable fundraising effort by Calum’s family and friends. It was another great example of a community coming together and the game was a credit to both sets of players and a fitting tribute to Calum.

"Support in Mind Scotland would like to thank everyone who attended and supported the event, and the money raised will be used to deliver crucial services to people affected by mental illness.”
