VOLUNTEERS and people accessing our services have been doing some sterling work in raising funds and awareness for Support in Mind Scotland in recent weeks.

At Stewartry Resource Centre in Castle Douglas, our volunteer/service user Maria and our Project Worker Donna Black painstakingly crocheted 100 individual squares to celebrated this year's 1 in 100 Campaign, raising £150 sponsorship money in the process.

Explaining the process, Donna said: "I brought a crochet blanket in one day to show folks and see if any one was interested in learning how to do it. Maria took up the offer and we spent time going over how it was done.

"A week later and Maria came in with one she had made herself. When the 1 in 100 started I thought we could make 100 seven-inch squares and put together two blankets of 50 squares each.

"We then started asking for donations of wool and went around the local charity shops some kindly donated wool for free. Then we got started, working out colours and texture.

"When all 100 squares were completed Maria began the long, slow process of putting the squares together- a new skill for Maria.

"For me I am so chuffed with the finished blankets they are stunning - Maria has done a great job."

Maria is pictured above proudly showing off the finished article.

Meanwhile, Ben - who attends Kaleidoscope in Dumfries - swam 100 lengths of the pool at Bannatynes in Dumfries to raise funds for his local project.

Elsewhere, Jane Marks and friends held a charity night at Dunfermline Football Club in aid of Support in Mind Scotland and Samaritans, raising more than £1,300 for the charities, which will be match-funded by her employer.

And volunteer fundraiser Doreen Mitchell held a successful 'Swishing Party'. Girls of style and discrimination swooped on the items, donated by their friends, all to the sparkle of Prosecco! Lots of fun and a sizeable donation to SIMS as a result! Thanks to Doreen, Miranda, Dawn and Alison for their hard work. Doreen's husband is pictured below, getting into the spirit of the event, and checking out some of the items!

From swishing to scaring, Barbara and Iain from our National Office were joined by Stewart and Jackie from the Stafford Centre for a spook-tacular Hallowe’en Family Fun Day at Morrisons in Granton.

The event featured bag-packing, face-painting, scavenger hunts and a best costume competition and a fantastic £276.08 was raised. Thanks to the Morrisons staff and Community Champion Fiona Smit, as well as everyone who donated.

Our 2016 1 in 100 Campaign was a resounding success in its new summer slot - raising more than £12,000 for Support in Mind Scotland's services - and it will return in 2017, again running for 100 days between 3 July and 10 October.

We are enormously grateful to everyone who helped us raise funds and awareness in 2016, and we have a number of events lined up before the next 1 in 100 begins, including the return of our popular Ceilidh, which will be held in Lauriston Hall, Edinburgh on Friday, 10 February.

More immediately, we have our Grand Christmas Raffle looming. Tickets priced £1 are still available by clicking the link HERE, and the draw will be made live on Radio Stafford on Monday, 12 December.
