Get involved Volunteer Say hello to our volunteer project, Support in Mind Scotland for Students! Say hello to our new volunteer project, Support in Mind Scotland for Students! SiMS for Students is led by volunteers who have a connection to University and a passion for supporting student mental health. A group of 5 volunteers have started the pilot project together with the National Information Service team. There are growing concerns that while the desire for mental health support has been rising sharply amongst students in recent years, it is not always obvious for students to know where to turn. Shiya, one of our SiMS for Students Volunteers for #UniMentalHealthDay 2020 SiMS for Students aims to increase awareness of the need for student mental health support, and add another avenue outside of the University to those who are struggling. Volunteers have been busy mapping the mental health support available to students at their Universities and looking at ways to increase awareness of supports through promoting SiMS National Information Service. The National Information Service could be a great resource for students seeking support. Advisors can provide callers with detailed, tailored information about how to access support, meaning students could find out about options for support both at home and at their University. Georgia, lead Volunteer for SiMS for Students Georgia, our volunteer leading the project, said, "We are excited to share our new volunteer and student-led pilot project, Support in Mind Scotland for Students! Our group of student volunteers are raising the profile of Support in Mind Scotland's mental health support services at Universities across Scotland, from Edinburgh to St Andrews. Students are facing huge challenges due to COVID-19. Many are isolated, living miles away from their support networks. They are dealing with disruption to studies, and for some the impact of a COVID-19 diagnosis for themselves, their friends or their family. Before the pandemic there was already a pressing student mental health crisis, with the numbers of students seeking support increasing year on year, but many facing long waiting lists." Steven, another member of the SiMS for Students Project We are very excited about where this pilot project could lead!
